Structural Fire Response – Old Industrial Area, Tzaneen
Incident Date: 20 September 2025 Location: Old Industrial Area, Tzaneen OB Reference: OB/0007
Initial Report:
At approximately 20:49 on Saturday, 20 September 2025, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service received a request for assistance at a structural fire in the Old Industrial Area of Tzaneen.
This incident would become the largest structural fire attended by Asterix up to that point.
The Asterix team was immediately dispatched to the scene.
Situation on Arrival:
The team arrived at approximately 20:57.
On arrival, firefighters found that the affected building was already fully involved in fire, with the structure engulfed in flames.
Because the incident was located within the industrial area, the fire presented a serious exposure risk. The surrounding environment included neighbouring businesses and other potentially combustible materials commonly found in industrial properties.
A further major concern was the proximity of the fire to the nearby PetroSA depot, which increased the importance of stopping the fire from spreading beyond the original building.
Asterix Response:
Two Asterix crew members responded with the skid-unit firefighting vehicle.
Fire-suppression operations commenced on arrival, with resources directed toward containing the fire, protecting surrounding property and preventing extension to nearby businesses and infrastructure.
Fire-suppression chemicals were also recorded as having been used during the operation.
Actions Taken:
Because the building was already extensively involved by the time responding resources arrived, firefighters focused their efforts on:
Suppressing the active fire where possible.
Protecting neighbouring businesses from radiant heat and flame spread.
Preventing the fire from spreading further through the industrial area.
Reducing the risk of extension toward nearby high-risk infrastructure, including the PetroSA depot.
Saving whatever could still reasonably be protected.
Maintaining suppression operations until the incident was brought under control.
The incident required several hours of sustained firefighting.
Outcome:
The fire was recorded as contained at approximately 01:04 on 21 September 2025.
Once containment had been achieved and the scene was sufficiently stable, responding resources began standing down.
The Asterix team returned to the office at approximately 01:37, nearly five hours after the original dispatch.
The affected building was recorded in the operational report as completely destroyed.
A major operational success of the incident was that firefighters were able to help prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring businesses and nearby high-risk exposures in the surrounding industrial area.
Cooperation:
The incident involved multiple emergency-service resources working together during the structural fire response.
The Asterix operational record specifically notes the involvement of Tzaneen EST, together with other emergency-service resources present at the scene.
Large structural fires in industrial areas require coordinated operations between all available resources, particularly where neighbouring businesses, combustible materials and critical surrounding infrastructure are exposed to heat and flame spread.
Public-Safety Message:
Structural fires in industrial areas can escalate rapidly because of fuel loads, stored materials, business premises situated close together, and the risk of fire spreading to neighbouring properties.
When a building fire is discovered:
Contact emergency services immediately.
Do not enter or re-enter a burning structure.
Keep people well clear of the affected building.
Be aware that nearby businesses and infrastructure may also be at risk.
Keep access routes clear for responding emergency vehicles.
Follow instructions from emergency personnel at the scene.
Early reporting and rapid exposure protection remain critical in limiting spread and reducing loss during major structural fires.
