Our Story

Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service is a registered Non-Profit Company (NPC) based in Tzaneen, Limpopo, operating as a dedicated community Fire & Emergency Support Service. Although officially registered as an NPC on 1 October 2025, the organisation’s operational roots extend far beyond its formal registration.

What began years ago as internal firefighting and emergency support within a sister company gradually evolved into a trusted community response capability, as demand for assistance increased and incidents grew in frequency and complexity.

As communities, emergency networks and partner services increasingly relied on our support, it became clear that a fully independent, formally governed emergency support organisation was required. This led to the establishment of Asterix as its own Non-Profit Company, with defined governance, operational standards, accountability systems and a clear public mandate.

What We Do

Asterix provides fire and emergency support across a wide range of incidents, including:
  • Structural fires
  • Veld and forest fires (our core field of expertise)
  • Vehicle fires
  • Motor vehicle accidents (all types)
  • Basic medical first response
  • Additional on-scene emergency support when required
Our teams operate in close cooperation with official Fire Services, licensed Emergency Medical Services (EMS), SAPS, Traffic Services and Disaster Management, providing additional capacity, manpower and specialist support where needed.

Our Role & Boundaries

It is important to clearly state that Asterix is not:
  • A private fire brigade
  • An ambulance service
  • A statutory emergency authority
We operate strictly as a Fire & Emergency Support Service.
Our role is to assist, support and supplement existing emergency operations — never to replace statutory services. This approach ensures responsible operations, legal compliance, and strong inter-agency cooperation.

Our Mission

Our mission is to protect lives, property and the environment through:
Preparedness and prevention
Rapid and coordinated emergency response
Strong communication and dispatch systems
Ongoing community fire safety education
By focusing on both response and prevention, we aim to reduce the impact of fires and emergencies before they escalate.

Independence & Partnerships

Asterix operates independently as a Non-Profit Company, with its own identity, systems and operational command. We are proudly a sister organisation of Rautenbach Holdings (Pty) Ltd, which may provide logistical, technical or manpower support when required.
This relationship strengthens our operational capacity while maintaining clear organisational separation and accountability. Together, we work toward a shared goal: safer, more fire-resilient communities across the Greater Tzaneen and Greater Letaba regions.

Why the Name “Asterix” Matters

The organisation is named after Asterix, a real beloved dog whose courage, loyalty and constant presence during years of firefighting and emergency work became symbolic of everything this organisation stands for.
His twin brother Geronimo is still “fully Involved in a management role” Asterix was always alert, always nearby, and never hesitant in difficult conditions. Naming the organisation after him is a tribute — and a promise — that those same values guide every response we undertake.

“Responding when others can’t

preventing the next fire before it starts.”

Asterix exists to provide FREE, community-based fire and emergency support, working in cooperation with official services.
