Learning About Fire Safety From a Young Age:
On 10 September 2025, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service visited the Grade 2 learners at Wolkberg Akademie CVO in Tzaneen for an interactive fire-safety education programme.
The visit was designed to introduce young learners to basic fire-safety principles while giving them an opportunity to see and experience some of the equipment used during firefighting operations.
For Asterix, teaching children about fire safety forms an important part of helping build safer communities.
What the Learners Learned:
During the visit, the children were introduced to several important fire-safety concepts in an age-appropriate and practical way.
Topics included:
How to stay safe when a fire is nearby.
What children should not do around fire.
Why fire should never be treated as a toy.
Why an adult or emergency service should be alerted when a fire is discovered.
The importance of teamwork during emergencies.
How firefighters and community members work together to protect people and property.
The objective was to help the learners understand that while firefighting equipment can be interesting and exciting, fire itself must always be treated with respect.
Supervised Hands-On Learning:
One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for the learners to experience some firefighting equipment under close adult supervision.
The children were able to:
Spray water using real firefighting nozzles.
Experience how different firefighting equipment works.
Handle selected equipment under supervision.
Try on firefighting protective clothing.
Experience how heavy and specialised firefighting PPE can be.
These activities allowed the learners to connect the fire-safety lessons with a practical experience they could remember.
Why Practical Education Matters:
Young children often learn particularly well when information is connected to something they can see and experience.
Being shown a fire hose, seeing how a nozzle operates or trying on firefighting clothing can turn an abstract safety lesson into something real.
The purpose of the demonstration was therefore not simply entertainment.
It was an opportunity to teach children that emergency equipment has a serious purpose and that firefighters rely on training, protective equipment and teamwork to operate safely.
Fire-Wise Children Help Build Safer Communities:
Fire-safety education should begin before an emergency happens.
Children who understand basic principles such as staying away from uncontrolled fires, alerting an adult and moving to a safe place are better prepared if they ever encounter a real fire emergency.
Teaching children from a young age can also carry fire-safety awareness into their homes and families.
A simple lesson remembered by a child today may help prevent a dangerous situation in the future.
