Fleming Fire – George’s Valley, Tzaneen

Initial Report:
On the afternoon of 23 August 2025, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service responded to the Fleming Fire, opposite Asgard in the George’s Valley area near Tzaneen.
The incident involved a fire from the previous day that had rekindled and required renewed firefighting attention.
Asterix Response:
The Asterix team was dispatched at approximately 16:15 and arrived in the George’s Valley area at approximately 16:55.
Two crew members responded with a skid-unit firefighting vehicle to assist with fire-suppression operations.
Situation on Arrival:
The fire was burning within a pine plantation.
Weather conditions recorded during the response included:
Fire Danger Index: 59 – Yellow
Temperature: Approximately 27°C
Humidity: Approximately 22%
Wind: Approximately 5 km/h
Actions Taken:
Asterix assisted with active fire-suppression operations using the skid unit while working alongside landowner teams and other firefighting resources at the incident.
The active fire was brought under control and recorded as contained at approximately 17:49.
Containment did not, however, mark the end of the operation.
Because this fire had already rekindled after the previous day's fire activity, the Asterix crew remained on scene after containment to carefully monitor the affected area for hotspots and any signs of another flare-up.
Hotspot monitoring continued until approximately 18:45, when conditions were considered sufficiently stable for the team to conclude its involvement and return to the office.
Outcome:
The rekindled Fleming Fire was successfully contained.
Asterix remained at the scene for almost an additional hour after containment to monitor hotspots and reduce the risk of renewed fire activity before leaving the area.
No damage to infrastructure or property was recorded on the response report.
The total area affected by the fire was not recorded, and the cause remained unknown.
Cooperation:
Asterix operated alongside landowner firefighting teams and other resources present at the incident.
Wildfire suppression frequently requires cooperation between landowners, private firefighting resources and other responding organisations, particularly when fires affect plantations, agricultural land and surrounding veld.
Why Hotspot Monitoring Matters:
A wildfire being declared contained does not necessarily mean that all fire activity has ended.
Heat can remain hidden in tree stumps, roots, pine needles, plantation litter, slash and other combustible material long after visible flames have disappeared.
Wind or changing conditions can cause these hotspots to flare up again and potentially establish a new active fire front.
The Fleming Fire was itself a rekindling of the previous day's fire, making continued monitoring particularly important during this response.
Landowners are encouraged to continue monitoring recently burnt areas after active suppression has ended and to remain alert for:
Smoke emerging from previously burnt areas
Smouldering vegetation or tree stumps
Persistent heat in plantation or veld fuels
Renewed flame activity
Changes in wind that may expose remaining hotspots
Early detection of a flare-up can prevent a contained fire from developing into another major incident.
