Initial Report:
At approximately 21:00 on 14 March 2026, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service received reports of a single-vehicle accident on the R36 between Politsi and Modjadjiskloof, shortly before the Ramadipa River Bridge.
Asterix responded to the reported motor vehicle accident to provide emergency support as required.
Situation on Arrival:
On arrival, the Asterix team met with members of Modjadjiskloof SAPS as well as personnel from Westfalia Security.
It was reported at the scene that the vehicle's possible sole occupant had left the area following the accident.
No patient requiring treatment or rescue was located by the Asterix team at the scene.
During the subsequent scene assessment, a large quantity of cigarettes was discovered inside the vehicle.
The cigarettes were described at the scene as illicit cigarettes, and the matter was handled by SAPS as part of their law-enforcement responsibilities.
Asterix Scene-Lighting Support:
Because the incident occurred at night, sufficient lighting was important for personnel working around the damaged vehicle and roadway.
Asterix's equipped fire and rescue response vehicle was used to provide high-powered scene lighting, improving visibility while SAPS processed the scene.
The lighting allowed personnel to work more safely and provided illumination while cartons were removed from the accident vehicle and transferred into SAPS custody.
Asterix's involvement remained limited to scene safety, lighting and operational support.
The investigation, handling of the cigarettes and any related law-enforcement matters remained entirely the responsibility of the South African Police Service.
Supporting Other Services:
Asterix's role during this incident illustrates an important part of emergency support: not every call requires the organisation to take the lead.
Sometimes the most useful contribution is to provide a specific resource that another service needs to complete its work safely.
In this case, the primary responsibility for the scene rested with SAPS, while Asterix provided lighting and operational support within its available capability.
