Illegal Rubbish Fire – Stasie Street, Tzaneen Railway Station Area.
Incident Date: 21 August 2026 Location: Stasie Street, behind Tzaneen Railway Station Incident Type: Rubbish fire / fire-ban contravention.
Initial Response:
At approximately 17:00 on 21 August 2026, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service was dispatched by the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) to a reported fire in the area of the Tzaneen railway station.
The incident was located at one of the station houses in Stasie Street, behind the railway station.
Asterix arrived on scene at approximately 17:11.
Situation on Arrival:
On arrival, responders found that the occupant of the property had set a large heap of rubbish alight next to the houses and an adjoining open field.
The location of the fire created a risk of it spreading from the rubbish pile into the open field and nearby dense vegetation.
Asterix immediately began suppressing the fire and preventing further spread.
Firefighting Operations:
The fire was successfully contained before it could extend into the surrounding open field or nearby dense bush.
The incident was recorded as contained at approximately 17:40, and the remaining burning material was extinguished.
The response unit returned to base at approximately 17:53.
Fire-Ban Awareness:
The occupant advised responders that he was not aware that burning was prohibited during the current fire-ban period.
Asterix explained the restriction to him and the importance of avoiding open burning during the fire-ban period.
At the time of this incident, the 2026 winter fire ban remained in effect, meaning controlled and open fires were not permitted unless specifically authorised under the applicable fire-protection requirements.
This incident highlights the importance of public awareness during fire season. Even a rubbish fire can escape quickly into surrounding vegetation and develop into a much larger veldfire.
