Search & Access Assistance After Vehicle Rollover – R529 Letsitele to Mafarana

Initial Report:
On the morning of 22 January 2026, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service received a request for assistance from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and a towing company following a serious motor vehicle accident on the R529 between Letsitele and Mafarana.
The vehicle had reportedly struck cattle at high speed before leaving the roadway and rolling some distance into dense bush.
Due to the position of the vehicle and the extremely thick thorn vegetation surrounding it, access to the wreck was severely restricted.
Situation on Arrival:
There was concern that the occupant of the vehicle may have been ejected during the rollover.
Because responders could not adequately access the area around the vehicle, Asterix was requested to assist with clearing vegetation and searching the surrounding area for a possible injured or deceased occupant.
The dense thorn bush made both access and a thorough search difficult.
Asterix Response:
Asterix deployed chainsaws and appropriate cutting equipment to create safe access around the vehicle.
Vegetation and thorn growth were carefully cleared so that responders could reach the wreck and inspect the surrounding area more effectively.
Once sufficient access had been created, a search was conducted around the vehicle and through the immediate surrounding bush.
Search Operation:
The search focused on determining whether an occupant had been thrown from the vehicle during the rollover.
Given the severity of the accident and the distance the vehicle had travelled into the bush, the possibility of an ejected patient had to be taken seriously.
Responders carefully searched the accessible area around the vehicle and surrounding vegetation.
Outcome:
Fortunately, no injured or deceased person was located during the search.
The operation allowed SAPS, towing personnel and other responders to gain improved access to the vehicle and surrounding scene.
The incident concluded without the discovery of an ejected occupant.
Cooperation:
The response involved cooperation between Asterix, SAPS and the attending towing service.
This incident demonstrated how emergency support can extend beyond conventional firefighting or medical first response. In this case, specialist cutting equipment and practical scene-access capability were required before other responders could safely and effectively work around the crashed vehicle.
