Veldfire Response – Tzaneen Railway Station
Incident Date: 21 August 2025 Location: Tzaneen Railway Station, Tzaneen OB/0001
Initial Report:
On the afternoon of 21 August 2025, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service responded to a fire at the Tzaneen Railway Station.
The team was dispatched at approximately 17:20 and arrived at the railway station at approximately 17:30.
Situation on Arrival:
The fire was burning through grass and bush vegetation within the railway-station area and had spread into areas around the rail infrastructure.
The operational report recorded a Fire Danger Index of 64 – Orange, indicating elevated fire conditions.
Weather conditions recorded during the response included:
Temperature: Approximately 25°C
Humidity: Approximately 25%
Wind: Approximately 9 km/h from the south-west
The cause of the fire was recorded as unknown.
Approximately 0.4 hectares were estimated to have burned.
Asterix Response:
Two Asterix crew members responded with the skid-unit firefighting vehicle and assisted with active fire-suppression operations.
The municipal fire brigade was initially involved in the incident and stood off at approximately 17:40 for shift change.
Asterix and Tzaneen EST, with two EST members recorded on the operational report, continued firefighting operations.
Actions Taken:
Asterix and Tzaneen EST continued working to contain the fire as it spread through the dry grass and vegetation around the railway infrastructure.
The fire had reached areas beneath and immediately around some of the stationary trains, requiring firefighters to work carefully to prevent further spread around the rail assets.
Using the skid unit and available firefighting resources, the teams continued suppression until the advancing fire was stopped and the incident brought under control.
No aerial firefighting support was activated, and no fire-suppression chemicals were recorded as having been used during the Asterix response.
No equipment damage or malfunction was reported.
Outcome:
The fire was recorded as contained at approximately 19:00.
Approximately 0.4 hectares of grass and bush vegetation were affected.
The incident report records damage to one fibreglass hut. No other infrastructure damage was recorded on the Asterix wildfire response report.
Following completion of the operation, the Asterix team returned to the office at approximately 19:40.
Cooperation:
The incident involved cooperation between several firefighting resources.
The municipal fire brigade attended during the earlier phase of the incident before standing off for shift change. Asterix and Tzaneen EST then continued active suppression operations until the fire was contained.
This response demonstrated the importance of continuity during wildfire operations, particularly where a fire is threatening transport infrastructure and cannot safely be left uncontrolled during an operational handover.
Public-Safety Message:
Fires in and around railway infrastructure present additional hazards because dry vegetation can carry fire rapidly beneath and alongside stationary rail equipment and other infrastructure.
During periods of elevated fire danger:
Dry grass and vegetation around infrastructure should be kept properly managed where responsibility permits.
Smoke or uncontrolled fires should be reported as early as possible.
Members of the public should remain clear of active fire scenes and railway infrastructure.
Fires should never be approached where trains, electrical equipment or other infrastructure may create additional hazards.
Firefighting resources should remain available until active spread has been stopped and the area is sufficiently stable.
Early intervention can prevent a relatively small vegetation fire from developing into a much more serious incident involving infrastructure or surrounding property.
