1 October 2026 | Help Keep Asterix Ready – An Urgent Appeal for Community Support

Behind every emergency response is an entire operational system that must be maintained, funded and kept ready. Asterix is appealing to the Greater Tzaneen and Greater Letaba communities for urgent financial support to help keep our independent non-profit fire and emergency support service operational.

When the Community Calls, We Need to Be Ready

When smoke is reported late at night, our Dispatch assesses the information and sends a response vehicle where needed and operationally possible.

When a motor vehicle accident is reported, we respond where appropriate or assist with coordinating the relevant emergency services.

When dangerous road conditions develop, we share information that may help motorists avoid an accident.

These are the moments the community sees. What is often less visible is everything required to make that response possible.

The Real Cost of Emergency Readiness

Operating a fire and emergency support service involves considerable ongoing expenditure, even on days when there are no emergencies.

Some of our essential operational expenses include:

  • Fuel for our emergency response vehicles.
  • Vehicle servicing, maintenance and repairs.
  • Firefighting equipment maintenance and replacement.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Medical first-response supplies and consumables.
  • Insurance and operational compliance.
  • Training and continued skills development.
  • Radio communication systems and subscriptions.
  • Dispatch telephone and WhatsApp connectivity.
  • Internet and data services.
  • Weather-information services and subscriptions.

All these expenses form part of maintaining a service that can respond when the next emergency occurs.

Emergency readiness does not begin when the telephone rings. It begins long before the call is received.

Why Weather Forecasting Is an Operational Expense

One of our less visible but important operational expenses involves access to reliable weather information and forecasting services.

Asterix pays for weather-information services and subscriptions, including access to South African Weather Service (SAWS) data.

Weather forecasting is not simply something we use to find out whether it will rain. It forms part of our daily operational planning.

By monitoring forecast temperatures, humidity, wind conditions and the Fire Danger Index, we can assess whether conditions may favour the development and spread of veldfires.

Similarly, forecasts indicating heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, mist or reduced visibility help us anticipate conditions that may increase the risk of motor vehicle accidents and other emergencies.

This information helps us plan our operational readiness, monitor developing risks and prepare available resources according to the conditions expected for the day.

We cannot predict exactly when an emergency will happen, but reliable weather information helps us prepare for the conditions in which emergencies may occur.

Our Immediate Equipment Need

In addition to our ongoing operational expenses, Asterix currently needs assistance with replacing an emergency rooflight on one of our response vehicles.

Emergency warning lights play an important role in making a response vehicle visible to other road users, particularly at night, in poor weather and when operating at emergency scenes.

Replacing this equipment is an important part of maintaining the safety and readiness of our response vehicle.

Contributions toward this replacement, as well as our wider operational expenses, would be deeply appreciated.

Would You Consider Supporting Us with R100 a Month?

Asterix Fire & Rescue is operated by Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC, an independent non-profit fire and emergency support service serving the communities of Greater Tzaneen and Greater Letaba.

We are appealing to residents, businesses, farmers and other community supporters who believe in the importance of having a local emergency response resource available.

Would you consider contributing R100 per month toward keeping Asterix ready?

R100 is a suggested contribution, not a required amount. Any monthly donation, whether smaller or larger, is sincerely appreciated.

Once-off donations are equally welcome.

Regular monthly contributions are particularly valuable because they provide a more dependable source of income from which we can plan essential operational expenses.

Consistent support allows us to make decisions about maintenance, fuel, equipment and communications before an emergency occurs, rather than having to find funding after something has already gone wrong.

How to Donate

Donations can be made directly to our registered non-profit organisation by electronic funds transfer.

Transparency and Accountability

We believe that members of the community who support our organisation should be able to see the work being done.

Our website contains an archive of incident reports, operational updates and community activities.

Where records are available, our incident reports also show information such as response times, kilometres travelled and the total time committed to an incident.

These records help demonstrate the practical commitment involved in providing emergency support to our communities.

Donations and Priority Membership Are Separate

Community donations are completely voluntary and are separate from our Asterix Priority Membership programme.

A donation does not purchase emergency-response priority or guarantee that resources will be available for a particular incident.

Emergency calls are assessed according to their seriousness, available resources, operational circumstances and the assistance required.

Members of the public are not refused emergency assistance simply because they have not made a donation.

Our separate Priority Membership programme has its own terms, benefits and enrolment process.

Help Us Remain Ready for the Next Call

We know that not everyone is in a position to contribute financially.

If you are unable to donate, sharing this appeal with someone who may be willing to assist is another valuable way of supporting our organisation.

Whether your contribution is R50, R100, R500 or another amount, it helps support the operational resources behind our service.

We are not asking the community to fund one particular emergency.

We are asking for help to remain ready for the emergencies we have not yet received calls about.

To every individual, family and business already supporting Asterix: thank you for believing in what we are working to provide for our communities.

Your support makes a meaningful difference.

Help keep Asterix ready. Consider becoming a monthly supporter or making a once-off donation today.
