24 September 2026 | Large Veldfire Response – Tarentaalrand / Dando Area

  • Incident Date: 24 September 2026
  • Location: Tarentaalrand / Dando area
  • Incident Type: Large veldfire
  • Initial Fire Report: 11:46
  • Asterix Dispatch: 12:52
  • Returned to Base: 15:02
  • Distance Travelled: 55 km
  • Total Operational Time:Approximately 2 hours 10 minutes
Initial Report: At approximately 11:46 on 24 September 2026, a large veldfire was reported in the Tarentaalrand / Dando area. At 12:52, Asterix The Long Firefighting Dog NPC – Fire & Emergency Support Service was dispatched by the Letaba Fire Protection Association (LFPA) to provide additional assistance at the incident.
Situation on Arrival: On arrival, Tzaneen EST and Mopani Fire Services were already on scene and had done excellent work in containing the advancing fire and protecting the nearby structures. The fire was burning through an extremely dense and heavily overgrown area, which made direct access to several active sections and hotspots very difficult. Because of the density of the vegetation, reaching the entire fire edge directly was not practical. One of the most effective options was therefore to use the roadway as an accessible containment line, allowing sections of the fire to reach an area where crews could safely intercept and suppress them, while other teams continued attempting to reach hotspots deeper inside the affected vegetation.
Difficult Access and Dense Vegetation: The density of the bush was one of the main challenges during this incident. In heavily overgrown areas, fire can move through vegetation while responders have limited access to the active fire front. This can make suppression more difficult because: Firefighters may not be able to reach all hotspots directly. Thick vegetation limits vehicle access Hidden fire activity may continue inside dense bush. Crews need to identify safer and more accessible containment points. The roadway provided one such point where sections of the fire could be more effectively contained as they reached the accessible edge.
Working Together: This incident again demonstrated the importance of different firefighting resources working together. Tzaneen EST and Mopani Fire Services had already made excellent progress before Asterix arrived, particularly in containing the fire and keeping the surrounding structures safe. Asterix sincerely thanks Tzaneen EST for their continued willingness to work alongside us. It is genuinely a pleasure working with such a well-organised team, and every incident where our teams work together reinforces the value of combining knowledge, experience, manpower and equipment. When we work together, we win together. Asterix also extends sincere appreciation to Mopani Fire Services, the Letaba Fire Protection Association, and every other role-player involved in the response.
Operational Commitment
  • Dispatch: 12:52
  • Returned to Base: 15:02
  • Total Operational Time: Approximately 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Distance Travelled: 55 km
Outcome: Through the combined efforts of the responding teams, the fire was successfully contained and the nearby structures remained protected. Although the extremely dense vegetation made it difficult to reach all hotspots directly, the coordinated use of accessible containment points together with crews working deeper inside the affected area allowed the incident to be brought under control. Asterix returned to base at approximately 15:02.
Veldfire Preparedness: Dense and overgrown vegetation can significantly complicate veldfire suppression. Property owners and land managers are encouraged to maintain reasonable access around properties and important infrastructure wherever possible and to reduce excessive fuel accumulation in accordance with applicable fire-management requirements. Early reporting is equally important. The sooner a veldfire is reported, the sooner available resources can be activated before the incident becomes more difficult to access and control.
Community Reporting Works: Early reporting of fires and emergencies allows available resources to be activated as quickly as possible. The sooner a developing fire is reported, the better the opportunity responders have to limit spread, protect property and prevent a smaller incident from becoming a much larger emergency. For urgent incidents, the fastest way to contact Asterix remains the 24/7 Emergency Line.
